How to repair my own washing machine, Helpful Hints top
TEST TO MAKE SURE THERE IS NO POWER TO THE APPLIANCE BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY WORK ON THE APPLIANCE
First of all ALWAYS isolate the Washing Machine from the mains supply. If your oven is hard-wired in then turn it off at the wall AND at the consumer unit. These types of installations SHOULD have there own circuit to isolate at the consumer unit. NEVER rely on theswitch alone. Some of the modern single built in ovens use a standard plug; ensure that it is removed before you attempt to work on your Washing Machine.
My Washing Machine is dead / wont start.
First of all, check the fuse, swap a 13Amp fuse from an appliance that is working. If the indicator/panel lamp goes on & off with the switch, then it looks like the door interlock, or, the door handle is the culprit.
My Washing Machine door wont open.
First of all, don’t panic. Normally its something simple that causing the problem. Is there water in the machine? If so, you need to drain the machine, the latest types of machine have a device which prevents you from opening the door while there is water in it. See My Washing Machine wont empty water. If the machine is empty, and, it still wont open, the fault is either in the door handle, door catch, or, door interlock . You can try to pull the door striker/hook towards yourself, and, should open the door.
My Washing Machine wont empty water.
There are quite a number of reasons why a washing machine won’t empty, the main problems are, blocked drain filter, blocked internal hoses, or, faulty drain pump. The first thing to do is drain the washing machine manually.
Unhook the drain hose from the wall outlet pipe & lower into a bucket / basin , Lift the hose to stop the flow of water. Allow for several basins of water. If your machine is plumbed directly into the sink U bend, you need to unscrew it from the sink fitting & lower into a bucket / basin. If only a trickle of water flows out, then the blockage is most likely in the sump hose or drain filter. Something large like a sock more than likely caught in the sump hose. You may need to call an engineer. While the machine hose is disconnected from the sink U bend, any water in the sink will probably pour out through this opening & flood the cabinet until you re-attach the hose. Now, you can check the machine itself for internal blockages. First of all, check the drain filter ( if accessible), & the sump hose (drum pump) for items caught on the inside, finally the ridged outlet hose itself. If all these parts are clear, this leaves the pump as the most likely reason for not emptying.
As most modern machines have pumps which are not repairable, you will need to replace the pump .
My Washing Machine wont spin properly.
First of all, check the drum moves freely. If not there may be something caught in the drum. You may need to call an engineer. If the drum moves freely. Inspect the belt is on properly. If not you to replace the belt. If the belt is on. Then see if the motor has carbon brushes fitted to it. If not, check the motor capacitor. If it has carbon brushes fitted. Inspect the carbon brushes. (Optimum length is 50mm, minimum 2-3mm) Both ends of the carbons should be shiny & not dull. If not replace the carbon brushes.
My Washing Machine drum wont turn properly.
See My Washing Machine wont spin properly.
My Washing Machine is stopping on the cycle.
There are many reasons why this would happen. One of the most expensive components on a washing machine is the programme timer & of the lowest failure rates. Good news Eh!
In order for the timer to complete the cycle. All the other components should be in good working order also. The machine must fill to a washing level, heat the water, empty the water, fill & empty for the rinses & then spin & knock itself off. It is important to assess if the machine has water in it when it stops on the cycle or not. If the machine hasn’t water in it. See My Washing Machine wont fill with water. If the machine has water in it. Check the heater is o.k. If the heater is faulty. Replace the heater . If the heater is o.k. You may need to call an engineer. If the machine wont empty. See My Washing Machine wont empty water.
My Washing Machine won’t fill with water.
First of all. Check the water supply is at the machine. To do this turn off the cold water tap. Unscrew the hose at the back of the machine. Put the hose into a bucket/basin. Turn the water tap on. Water should flow. Turn the off to stop the water flow. If water doesn’t flow Check the water tap filter for a blockage.
Repeat the procedure for the hot water inlet. If the machine isn’t filling with water & the drum doesn’t move. Check the inlet valve if the water valve is faulty Replace the water valve. **If the machine doesn’t fill at any stage & the drum moves. Unplug the machine straight away. This is an internal fault & the washing machine could be heating without water in it. It could also represent a safety issue.**
You may need to call an engineer.
My Washing Machine never seems to do what I want it to do.
Check the programmer dial isn’t damaged or broken on the inside. If the inner dial doesn’t correspond with the programme selected. Replace the Control Dial
My Washing Machine door seal has grime on it / smells.
Sometimes this is caused by leaving the door closed after a wash is finished which forms mould on the door seal as a result of condensation . You can try to remove this by putting the machine on the highest temperature programme, no clothes in the machine & 2 capfuls of disinfectant e.g. Dettol or Savlon in the drum. If you’re not happy with the result fitting a new door seal will solve the problem.
It can also be caused using too much detergent. Reduce your dosage to of your present amount & gradually increase the amount until you’re happy with the wash result.
My Washing Machine is noisy.
The noise in a machine comes from three main sources Drum, Pump or Motor.
Drum Noise.
First of all, remove the belt from Motor to Drum Pulley. Visually inspect the rear of the tub for rust stains, This is a sign that water has leaked through the Bearing Seal & into the Drum Bearing itself. Rotate the Drum by hand. If the Drum lifts up & down then you need to replace the Drum Bearing Kit. If the noise appears to be in the Drum then you need to replace the Drum Bearing Kit. If you hear a scraping noise then there is something stuck in the drum i.e. bra wire or small toy.
Pump Noise
The Pump Noise is a faster noise than the drum noise. If the noise persists when the drum is stopped the fault is most likely in the Pump. When opening the Pump the first thing to check for is loose objects caught in the pump itself. If the Pump is clean. You’ll need to replace the Pump
Motor noise
Some Motors are repairable, some are not. You may need to call an engineer.
My Washing Machine is leaking.
First of all. Is the machine leaking when it is switched on or off? If the machine leaks when switched off.
Visually inspect the rear of the machine for leaks. You should check the external hoses & fittings for a leak. If faulty you’ll need to replace the Inlet Hose. If the machine leaks when switched on. Visually inspect the machine to see where the leak coming from. Does the machine leak immediately? If so check the internal fill hoses. If faulty you’ll need to replace the internal hose. If the machine leaks as it reaches door level Check the Door Seal. If faulty replace the Door Seal.
My Washing Machine has conditioner in the detergent drawer.
This is usually caused by the drawer itself becoming blocked. It is usually caused by using too much conditioner, or, powder being splashed into the conditioner section from the detergent side due to high water pressure or overdosing of powder. See My Washing Machine door seal has grime on it / smells. If the machine is on mains water try reducing the pressure This will help to cut down on splashing. Reduce the amount of conditioner to of the present dosage & increase gradually until you are happy with the wash results.
My Washing Machine Never Seems to be hot
The later type washing machines take in less water & therefore heat less water than the earlier appliances. This is to comply with new energy consumption regulations. The result is that few washing machines heat the water above the door glass during a wash cycle. If you’re happy with your wash results & the programme control is moving through the cycle You can be happy that the washing machine is heating the water.
My Washing Machine takes forever to complete the cycle?
The newer type washing machines take longer to complete a cycle than the earlier models. Some models can take up to 2 hours. The manufactures in their wisdom have decided that this is the option they should take. Nobody seems to know the reason!
My Washing Machine fills constantly, but the water doesn’t stay in the drum?
The most likely reason is the outlet hose of the washing machine is fitted too far in the outlet pipe in the wall. The Dishwasher outlet hose should be no more than 100mm / 4 inches into the wall outlet pipe
If the washing machine is plumbed into the kitchen sink Inspect the undersink U bend for blockages.
While the machine hose is disconnected from the sink U bend, any water in the sink will probably pour out through this opening & flood the cabinet until you re-attach the hose.
My Washing Machine leaks through the drawer while filling?
Usually there is a blockage in the washing machine drawer itself. Remove the washing machine drawer inspect it for obstructions.
The hose from the drawer to the tub can also become blocked You can inspect it for obstructions by squeezing the hose to see if there is an obstruction blocking it.
I can’t see the water in the drum, why?
See My Washing Machine door never seems to be hot?
Sometimes my clothes come out of the machine hot?
Sometimes the hot & cold hoses get swapped around without anyone realising it. The red hose is normally for hot water, the blue hose is normally for cold water. You can identify the hot water hose by unscrewing the hot water hose from washing machine & filling into a bucket / basin. After 30 – 60 secs. you should notice hot water coming from this hose, providing the water is hot in the hot press cylinder. If hot water doesn’t flow from this hose, try the other hose inlet hose using the same procedure. See My Washing Machine wont fill with water.
